HARIS

Bali, Indonesia · 6 MIN · Indonesia

I hope many people become aware of the importance of preserving nature from plastic pollution so our children can also enjoy the beautiful ocean.

Haris has been a Plastic Bank collection member in Bali since April 2021. He lives there with his wife and five children.

Previously Haris and his wife ran a tattoo business. Their house and business were destroyed in a fire. Following that, Haris discovered the value of recyclable materials and began collecting plastic along riverbanks and in local neighbourhoods.

He also surfs with his son and picks plastic out of the water at Biaung-Saba Beach in Gianyar. In a week he collects 70–100 kg of plastic.

A curator note —Because surfing at dawn and picking plastic out of the water is the same act of love.

The shot of him surfing with his son before collecting — that's the whole film for me. You see why he does it.

Biaung-Saba fills up again every tide. I cleaned there last month with a group of neighbours.

Rare to see a film that doesn't frame collectors as victims. Just a person doing the work.

70–100kg a week is wild. I wouldn't have believed it before watching.
