VANESSA & MARCIO

Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil · 8 MIN · Brazil

If we are not aware, everything ends up in nature.

Vanessa and her husband Márcio live in Itaguaí, Rio de Janeiro. They watched pollution pile up in the canal feeding into their nearby river.

Inspired by Vanessa's mother, who recycled, they began collecting plastic waste from a nearby mangrove and canal during the pandemic.

Together they've recycled over 3,200 kg of plastic and now educate fishermen and neighbours on recycling and waste disposal.

A curator note —They started during lockdown. They never stopped.
